The Story
- Left Cootamundra on Saturday 9.30 for Sydney, stopped off at Yass to visit our daughter Amanda and grandchildren Parker, Colby and Keenly who love the old cars.
- Michael was not feeling the best so I was driving. Michael has made me aware of watching gauges and I was doing this. I don't usually drive the Aspin Green Targa, Michael does and I was thinking to myself "I hope nothing happens when I am driving it".
- Murphy's Law it did. Near Pheasant's Nest I heard this terrible sound then the smell of burring oil, and smoke, I woke up Michael quickly with a yell and pulled over, thinking I have buggered the car.
- Michael got out and looked and the piston had gone through the air conditioning compressor. I had apparently turned itself on and that is what had happened.
- We then continued our journey to Prospect where we were staying the night and where we would meet the P76's next morning.
- The car had a lot of road grime, so we took it to a car wash to clean it. We found some $1 coins, enough to clean it. When we arrived at the wash, we found it was a hand wash and cost us $17 just to get it clean. Must say it looked great and they did a great job.
- Back to the Motel, and our son (who lives in Sydney) arrived after coming back from Gulgong, pick up a very rare Stover engine he has.
- The Targa was covered for the night and battery disconnected, and coil wire taken inside to disable it.
- Next morning a little bit of rain. Took the cover off and wiped it down. Then down came the rain.
- Steve Maher arrived, then the rest of the convoy to Eastern Creek. The rain is getting heavier.
- Arriving at Eastern Creek, so many great cars, and a great area, pity about the rain, it is still coming down.
- The P76's are parked and we have
- Bold as Brass Force7 Dave Nelson
- Corinthian Blue Glen Gray
- Crystal White Geoff Nye
- Peel Me a Grape Alex Shoobridge
- Aspin Green Targa Michael & Gwen Livingstone
- M V Green Mark Horton
- Home on the Orange Force7 Joe Green
- Peel me a Grape Troy Green
- Bold as Brass Ron Firth
- Country Cream Peter O'Brien
- Steve Maher was also present without a P76
- 9.40 The Leyland P76's took to the Eastern Creek raceway. What a thrill I thought. Little did I know I would be in for a thrill.
- Michael was just taken it steady on a very wet track, when the Targa decided to be a show off and went into a big sideways skid.
- Oh Geeeeeeeeeeeee. Michael was able to correct it and we wondered why when we came down past the grandstand for the first time there were flashes going off everywhere and a few cheers. We thought it was just for the P76's.
- Later we found out the announcer had said over the amplifiers "The Green Targa had gone into a spin at one of the turns.
- I rang the Kids on the mobile to tell them, "Dad may be off the steroids but he has just had his adrenaline fix with the spin out".
- The Leyland's were then taken back to there allotted place and the sign "Leyland P76 Car of the Year" placed above the cars.
- The rain continued all day and it was such a shame.
- I have been able to get some photos of this momentous occasion.
- With great surprise we were awarded the people's choice trophy.
- Thanks to Steve, and all they guys for having us at Eastern Creek, Thanks for your hospitality, sorry we brought the rain.
- Hope to see you all in Cootamundra at the National Meet, Easter, 2006
- Gwen
