Technical Electrical

"The ignition switch is functioning just."

The problem may not be the switch itself.
The switch in my car stopped functioning at all.
I couldn't start it.
With the help of a friend (an auto electrician in a former life) we got it to start, and it would restart
while the engine was warm.
But it would not start next morning when it was cold!
I changed the inhibitor switch on the gear box, no improvement.
I changed the ignition switch, using a new 'foreign' switch. No improvement.
I changed the relay, no improvement.
I was stumped for a while, but I dare not use the car because I knew I would get caught.
There was nothing else wrong with the car.
Then I had another idea.
The inhibitor switch wiring loom was 30 years old and had suffered heat over the years.
All the original connectors were still in use.
New connectors didn't help either.
Then, I replaced one of the white/red flash wires in the inhibitor switch wiring loom, and full improvement!!
I rebuilt the whole inhibitor switch wiring loom, and fitted it, and with the new ignition switch, it started like a new car, and has done ever since.
Before blaming your switch which is difficult to replace, check the inhibitor switch wiring loom; don't assume that the old wiring is as good as it was when new.
Mike Chadwick.
